Buenos Aires, Argentina
Che Guevera, Evita and Juan Domingo Peron, maté, soccer, and Tango. Escraches, a new type of political demonstration originating in Argentina in the years following the Dirty War, is proof of the importance of the street in artistic and political expression. But Argentinians also appreciate flamboyance. It's also not uncommon to run into flamboyant drag queens who expect to get tipped for "just being who they are." Performers are everywhere in San Telmo and on Sundays artists, dancers, and eccentrics can be found on Florida Street, Humberto Primo, and along Defensa performing or "just being" for a bit of cash.
