The Busking Project - Documenting Street Performance Worldwide

Street performance in South Carolina is a mixture of break dancing, acapella singing, modern instrumental and pop musicwell as music influenced by low country blue grass and traditional gospel sounds inherited from African American cultural traditions. Columbia, the capital of the state, is home to the First Thursday on Main event, which provides a stage for local street performers once a month in the downtown area. Fire breathers, break dancers, musicians, hula hoopers, and sword swallowers are some of the acts that have appeared on Main Street during the monthly event.  Other South Carolina locations supportive of busking are Charleston, Greenville, and Beaufort.
