Singapore
Singapore is small, multicultural, and young (the country gained full independence from Britain in 1965). The country claims a tradition of Malay, Chinese, and Indian theatrical dance, sculpture, and martial arts. Historically Singapore takes a harsh stance toward street performers; busking was illegal there for many years. Now artists audition for a license in order to perform. According to the Singapore National Arts Council, permission to busk is granted based on “competency and skill, expression and confidence in performance, engagement with the audience, and innovation and originality.”
