Paul and Jesse are clear about what they think: we are living in fascist times. “There are policemen and police officers,” Jesse told us. Policemen are those who find rapists and stop muggers, while officers are mini-fascists, taking the easy option and arresting people for running red lights, protesting and, of course, busking.
Both have escaped arrest. Should someone be caught illegally singing in the street, they get a fine of around €200, double if you want your instrument back. So, while we filmed them, we didn’t stay too long in any one place. Apparently it’s the locals who call the cops to report buskers, so stay too long in any one place, and you’re likely to get caught. Thankfully, though, we were able to get a couple of good songs without any hassle.
