Tim Penn

So far, Tim Penn is the only non-busker that we’ve added to The Busking Project’s performer pages, but this is for good reason. Street fights with the Yakuza aside, his busking story is unique: playing experimental guitar techniques and selling CDs in the 90s (back when everybody else on the street was selling cassette tapes, which added to his respectability), Tim also kept an immaculate spreadsheet of his daily grind, hoping to work out the perfect forumla for busking. From column to column the day of the week, weather, location, hours worked, interesting notes and amount made are all easily visible.

Although Tim never did find the perfect formula, he did make a lot of money busking. Able to make over $1,000 a day, whatever he was doing, he was doing it well. Very well. Still, he’s humble about it — “You’re 10 times cooler in Japan than you actually are,” he admits.

  1. Chris Smith says:

We will ask him if he’s selling CDs – in the mean time Tim is one of our featured buskers on our ‘Sounds from the Streets’ world busking CD!!! (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Busking-Project-Sounds-Streets/dp/B005HX9HWM).

We will follow up with Tim though :-)

  2. Is Tim still selling CD’s?
